FINEPRINT, Hong Kong International Airport

Kiosk Cafe

Lead Designers - John Chow; Renee Chow

Metagram has designed Fineprint's first store at Hong Kong International Airport. Located adjacent to Exit B in the Arrival's Hall, the Fineprint Kiosk is the first business arriving passengers see when entering Hong Kong.

The project brief was complex - the designated space was within a landlord owned pavilion with a distinctly infrastructural style canopy. Other than two service binnacles, the space was clear of obstruction and had a high level of visibility out to the airport atrium space. The cafe would have extremely high traffic consistently through day and night.

The challenge of the design program was to create an atmosphere in line with Fineprint's other stores, which are typically located in more urban contexts - whilst managing high traffic and movement.

Metagram's response was to create an innovative floor plan which would externalize all take-away high-speed traffic, whilst transforming the skylight covered center of the pavilion into an "urban oasis" - protected by the coffee bar and a series of blade walls, made of concrete, breeze blocks and blackened steel.

Throughout the space, the design incorporated a mixed selection of seating modes, constructed with carefully considered detailing - tables of HDL, solid oak and cantilevered powder-coated steel. Materials included micro cement, glass blocks, 70:30 brass, white oak veneer, blackened steel, black leather and rare Chinese grey granite known as "Sky Blue", only available from a single quarry in China's east.
